چکیده

The addition of the neuropeptide carnosine ( -alanyl-L-histidine) as a food additive to the basic protocol of Parkinson’s disease treatment results in significant improvement of neurological symptoms, along with increase in red blood cell Cu/Zn-SOD and decrease in blood plasma protein carbonyls and lipid hydroperoxides, with no noticeable change in platelets MAO B activity. The combination of carnosine with basic therapy may be a useful way to increase efficiency of PD treatment.

Amelioration of CNS Toxicities of L-Dopa in Experimental Models of Parkinson’s disease by Concurrent Treatment with Tinospora cordifolia

Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease, primarily affecting people of ages over 45-55 years, although young adults and even children can also be affected. The gold standard drug for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease is L-DOPA, but various studies have proved that the treatment with L-DOPA leads to the death of surviving dopaminergic neurons in the CNS. Hence ...

Recent advances in pharmacological therapy of Parkinson’s disease: Levodopa and carbidopa protective effects against DNA oxidative damage

Parkinson’s disease is one of the most common progressive neurodegenerative disorder. It is characterized by the depletion of dopamine in the dopaminergic neurons of the striatum of the brain. Pharmacological treatment involves the administration of a dopamine precursor, levodopa (L-Dopa), which crosses the blood-brain barrier and replaces the loss of dopamine in the brain. One of the main draw...

P01.36. Assessment of commercial formulations of mucuna pruriens seeds for Levodopa (L-DOPA) content

Purpose Mucuna pruriens (mucuna) seeds contain 3-6% LDOPA, and have been used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine to treat diseases resembling Parkinson’s disease (PD). Pilot studies in PD show that mucuna seed powder has similar effects to conventional levodopa/carbidopa medication. Formulations of mucuna seed are readily available through the internet, and are used by some PD patients as an alt...

Correlation Between Functional Balance and Mobility Tests and Postural Sway Measures in Dual Task Paradigm in Parkinson’s Disease (a Pilot Study)

Objective: The present study was aimed to correlate the clinical tests with the laboratory measures under dual task conditions in Parkinson's disease (PD). Materials and Methods: Eleven people with idiopathic PD (Modified Hoehn and Yahr scores 1-3) were selected by simple non-probability sampling. Center of pressure (COP) data obtained by force platform was used to calculate mean total velocity...

Factors Predictive of the Development of Levodopa-Induced Dyskinesia and Wearing-Off in Parkinson's Disease

I read the interesting report by Olanow et al. regarding factors predictive of the development of levodopa (L-dopa)-induced dyskinesia and wearing-off in Parkinson’s disease. L-Dopa has been widely used for more than 40 years, but a dose-finding study was never performed. I congratulate the authors for addressing this very important issue of L-dopa dosing. Their study provides scientific ration...
